Deafinitely Creative, the nation's only playwriting programme exclusively for deaf writers, has chosen its four finalists for 2010-11. The showcase of this new work, which will be performed by both Deaf and hearing actors in both English and British Sign Language, will run in London at the Drill Hall from 10-12 February 2011.
Overview on the programme: In 2008, Deafinitely Theatre, the UK's foremost professional Deaf-led theatre company, started Deafinitely Creative for the benefit of new Deaf writers. The project began as a response to the theatre’s constant challenge of finding well-trained and experienced Deaf playwrights.
Up until now, a lack of training for Deaf writers has meant that the theatre was constantly outsourcing writing to hearing authors. As one of our writers put it, “I have this fire inside me and yet often I can't release it. To me, English is the language of oppression, of being forbidden to sign. But it's the language of record, of influence.” The aim of Deafinitely Creative is to provide a credible source of training for Deaf writers and it is a vital and timely project as Deaf writers are woefully under-represented in British theatre and film, an imbalance that Deafinitely Theatre is keen to redress.
This year, Deafinitely Creative is, for the first time, enjoying the patronage of several outstanding writers including John Arden, Andy de la Tour, Alistair Beaton and Robin Soans. Through the kind support and guidance of these individuals, we feel that our writers will be able to produce a very high calibre of work.
Additionally, through the use of both BSL and English as well as aspects of physical theatre, Deafinitely Theatre has created a unique and exciting development process for deaf writers which translates into a stand-out experience for audiences and practitioners alike.
