Two Cultural Olympiad events to take place during 2010 are aimed at opening up arts and culture to new audiences and organisers want non-commercial organisations to get involved in developing and planning how these projects shape up.
Discovering Places launches in May 2010 and the annual London 2012 Open Weekend is being held from 23 – 25 July 2010.
In anticipation, London 2012 organisers are inviting organisations and individuals to attend an Information Sharing morning on Wednesday 13 January 2010 at Amersham and Wycombe College in Chesham. The event kicks off at 10.30 am and will include presentations from Creative Programmer for London 2012 - Caterina Loriggio, Chair of Discovering Places - Ian Lush and Project Manager for Open Weekend, London 2012 - Roli Barker.
The aim of the this meeting will be to explore how organisations can become a part of the Games with a view to attracting new audiences and involving and including more people by engaging with communities who may otherwise be sidelined.
Discovering Places has just this idea at its heart. Based around the country’s open spaces, local organisations will be encouraged through performance events and exhibitions to discover ‘the historical, built and natural environment and landscape of the UK from the remotest rural outpost to the toughest inner city.’
It is hoped that artistic and cultural engagement with these environments will help people to look at them in new ways – and discover their accessibility.
The launch for Discovering Places will fall on the May Bank Holiday Weekend (1 - 3 May 2010) when the target audiences of families, young people and local communities will be able to experience in new ways what is on their doorstep – be it an inner city park or open parkland.
London 2012 Open Weekend in July will celebrate and anticipate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games which open on 27 July 2012. Organisers are keen that non-commercial cultural, sporting, voluntary, youth and education organisations become involved in this event, as with Discovering Places, through being a part of the Cultural Olympiad.
If you or a representative of your organisation would like to attend the Information Sharing morning, email firstname.lastname@example.org before 8 January 2010 stating your name, job title and/or organisation. Title your email ‘Jan 13’.
