The impressive Olympic live site on Weymouth beach provided the setting for the culmination of Battle for the Winds incorporating the Unlimited commission Breathe. The large-scale outdoor performance took place on 28th of July to mark the beginning of the sailing events at the stunning Dorset location.

The free-to-enter family event was packed out for the culmination of a three-day long series of events that played out the story of the 7 winds being collected and battling in order to get the best winds the Olympic sailing events. The intriguing wind gathering contraptions were situated around the live site. The audience was invited to promenade and interact with the characters from the seven regions in the South West.

The action began as Aeolus, father of the winds, summoned his children from all corners of the region to battle to be the strongest wind to help the sailors. The strength, agility and artistry of the Cirque Bijou performers was displayed through the aerial circus skills above the crowd.

As the performance played out the breathers came to the stage to save the Aeolus and his children from the evil Doldrum. Gini, Liz Porter and Trish Wheatley were there to witness this spectacle.

I must admit the costumes were amazing. And being able to keep the costumes is just an amzing reminder of what i had been apart of. I didnt really get to watch the show myself properly which is a shame, but i can see where the lack of detail was. The screens did help but you didnt really get to see everything together. The proffessional aerialists were brilliant, but all im saying is that us breathers did work hard, and i think we looked good.

Absolutely Sophie. An amazing job, all things considered. I don't think Trish was criticising the efforts of the performers. It was more about the context. Unlimited commissions weren't billed as participatory arts, so I think more was expected than was perhaps reasonable. Lots about the staging of the event hadn't been thought through properly. One of the best moments for me, was walking back from the beach and happening across one of the breathers wearing one of the amazing costumes that so much love and effort had gone into making. It was a real treat to see the costume up close! On the beach where the performance took place everything was so far away that all the detail was lost. The scale of the work hadn't been thought through in terms of sightlines and so any story elements were submerged.

As you mentioned in your reveiw, you said the Disabled Aerialists. We did aerial for 7 days in total, and i think for a blind man, 3 girls with learning difficulties and a regular girl, who have never done this before in our lives, i believe we did a good job. I might not have had an advantage as i do not have a disability, but if you was put in a harness, 7 days to practise, then put on a crane at 200 foot, you would be pretty nervous and it wouldnt be perfect.
